CDA 172 Beryllium Copper is commonly used due to it's high strength and hardness compared to other commercial copper alloys. CDA 172 strength and hardness is similar to that of steel. To achieve it's high strengths whilst still maintaining acceptable levels of toughness for many industrial applications CDA 172 is age hardened. Toughness, fatigue strength, corrosion resistance etc can be modified and controlled by either underaging or overaging during the precipitation hardening process of the alloy.

A special heat treatment process improves the mechanical properties beyond the range of commercial aluminum bronzes. This alloy is an extra high strength version of nickel aluminum bronze. It is used where parts require extra high strength and hardness with some ductility and toughness. Typical applications include military aircraft bushings involving heavy loads, abrasion and high deformation. The extra high strength characteristics provide extreme wear resistance for extreme loads, abrasive wear, and high impact landings (such as aircraft carrier landings).

Corrosion Resistance
C63000 has good resistance to sulphuric, hydrochloric and other non-oxidizing acids, as well as salt water and brackish waters. Its superior erosion and cavitation properties facilitate use in pump and propeller applications. Retention of properties together with good oxidation resistance at elevated temperatures make C63000 suitable for service in internal combustion engines, steam plant applications and chemical processing applications. Very little deterioration takes place below 600° F and oxidation is retarded up to 1200° F by an oxide film. C63000 is very resistant to stress corrosion cracking in numerous applications. Galling is a common problem designers have to overcome when choosing materials. Affinity between two mating metallic surfaces can easily introduce galling when exposed to large bearing pressures and extreme temperatures. C63000 has great galling resistance, making it the material of choice for such applications.

AMS 4631 (UNS C64200) Silicon aluminum bronze combines the self lubricity of the silicon with the higher mechanical properties of aluminum bronze and is sometimes used in place of C63000 where specifications permit. C64200 is free-machining and has good anti-galling and anti-seizing properties. Typical applications involve valve stems, gears, marine and pole line hardware, wing pylons, bolts, nuts, bushings and valve body components.
